How to Use the UserTesting Recorder for Chrome Extension

We've recently added the UserTesting Recorder for Chrome Extension and are excited for you to use it! This recorder lives in your browser, so you don’t have to download anything to your computer to use it. It also has a new look and feel so be sure to watch the video or read the instructions below:


System Requirements:

All you need to have is a Google Chrome browser using Version 54 or newer.

This extension runs on PC, Mac, and Linux.



Starting a Test:

If you haven’t already done so, please install the Chrome Extension Recorder using the buttons provided. Once the Chrome Extension Recorder is installed, click the button that says “Begin test”.

You will see a pop up asking to “Use your microphone”, click “Allow”.



If this is your first time using the UserTesting Recorder for Chrome Extension you will see a tutorial. It will guide you through the recorder and give a few tips to keep in mind when you are recording.

Next, a pop up will ask you to share the contents of your screen. Make sure you choose the correct screen you want to share. It should be the screen with Chrome.


Navigating through a test:

You are now recording. The test website will automatically load and the Recorder will appear in the upper right of your browser window. Later on in this article, we’ll discuss what to do if the website doesn’t load as planned or you read a task that you can’t complete or doesn’t make sense.  

First you will see the scenario for the test. The “scenario” is the mindset you should be in while you are conducting the test, and it will help you step into the shoes of the customer’s target customer.  For example, if the scenario states: “Imagine today is your mother’s birthday and you’d like to pick out a nice gift and a card for her”, do your best to pretend it really is her birthday and conduct the test as you would if it were a real-life situation.



After you’ve read and understood the scenario, click start. Your first task will appear.

The task in the upper right corner will provide you with the test instructions and the actions you should complete as your browse the website. Please read each task carefully and make sure you complete the task in its entirety and as requested.



When you’re ready to begin the task, click “Begin this step”. This will minimize the task. When you want to see the task again, or are ready to move on, click the magnifying glass. When you’re finished with the task, click “Next Step”.



One of the most common reasons customers may give a test a low rating is the failure to complete tasks (either missing part of a task or not completing the task as requested). Some of our top testers find it helpful to read each task aloud before completing it, just to make sure they understand everything they’re being asked to do.

What if I can’t complete a task or I don’t understand what it’s asking me to do?


Reporting a problem:

If you get stuck during a test and either can’t complete a task or aren’t sure what to do next, click the “...” symbol on the task button next to the pause button.



This will open a window where you’ll be able to choose the problem you’re experiencing. In most cases, another window will open where you’ll be asked to provide a comment regarding the issue you experienced, and you’ll be released from the test. Your problem report will be sent to the Support team and the customer for the test will also be notified.


If you can’t move forward on a test you should Report a problem or Quit the test. You should also use Help if you receive a task that you don’t feel comfortable completing. Please do not click through the tasks and click “Stop Recording,” as this will submit the incomplete test to the customer. They may leave you a low rating as a result, and we won’t be able to pay you. For more information on reporting a problem, please read this article.

I’ve finished my test. Now what?

Once you’ve completed the final task of your test, you will see a task that asks for “Any final thoughts?”. This is an opportunity to recap your thoughts, summarize what you have said, and share any last remarks. Then click “Stop Recording” to end your recording and start the uploading process. At this point, you’ll be asked to answer up to 4 written questions about your experience browsing the website.



The more detailed you are here, the higher the chance that the customer will leave you a good rating! Once you submit your written answers, the upload window will appear. Be careful not to close this window before being prompted to do so, or you may lose your video. When your video has successfully uploaded, it is safe to close the uploading window and return to your dashboard.



Note: it may take a few minutes between uploading your video and seeing it appear on your completed tests tab. Videos need a bit of time to process on our end before they will display, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t see it immediately! However, if it’s been more than 10 minutes and the video hasn’t appeared, please contact support@usertesting.com.


Essential features you should know:

Audio Indicator: The audio indicator will show you whether or not your verbal feedback is being recorded successfully. It’s good practice to check this throughout your test, just to be sure nothing has gone wrong with your audio. If you notice anything wrong with your video, please contact support@usertesting.com.

Please ensure that the microphone icon is fluctuating:



Pause: This button will pause and un-pause your recording. You should use this feature sparingly, as too many pauses can be jarring for a viewer to watch. However, this button is helpful if you are interrupted during a test by the phone, dog, or loved ones who may not realize you’re otherwise occupied! It's helpful to briefly state why you paused when you resume.



Minimizing a task: You can minimize the task by clicking the magnifying glass icon. To open the task again, click the magnifying glass icon one more. Minimizing the task is helpful when the task is blocking some area of the test website that the customer would like you to see.


The website or app did not open: You can find the correct URL for the test in Help if it did not automatically open. You can either click the link provided or copy and paste it into your browser.

Quitting a Test: To end your recording before completing it, you can start by clicking the "..." symbol. Select "Quit this test" and select a reason for quitting. This will allow you to exit out of the test and give you the option to take another test.
