Attending your Live Conversation

Attending your Live Conversation

Last month we introduced Live Conversation, a new feature that lets a customer schedule a meeting with you. It's very important to take that schedule seriously.

The customer is counting on you to be available at the time you selected. If you don’t attend or cancel less than 24 hours before the session to allow time for the customer to find a new participant, you’ll receive an automatic 1-star rating.

What is a Screener?

Our customers are paying to get participants that match the profile of their target audience. The information asked for in screeners is used to match you with appropriate user testing opportunities. It's very important that the right participants are matched up to the right study; after all, you can't compare apples to oranges.

If you accept a test you do not qualify for it will be a waste of the customer's time, you will be rated 1 star, and you will not be eligible for payment.

The most common reason a customer may leave a low rating is for not completing the tasks as instructed. Complete the task as instructedbefore you move on to the next one and make sure that you are not working ahead of the customer's task instructions.

Explain Your Why

Explain your Why
UserTesting lets companies and developers gain valuable insight about what works, what doesn’t, and what people like you actually want from their products. Surveys and data can show what works, but only UserTesting can explain why.

The more you explain not just what you do, but why you do it, the more your video feedback will help companies and organizations create better experiences for everyone!

Top Tester Tip

Never ask for a rating!
You should never ask a customer for a rating in your video. If they hear you saying things like "please leave me a 5-star rating" it'll just make them uncomfortable and they might even leave you a low rating!

The High Price of Rushing
The average test should take 15 to 20 minutes to complete. Rushing through a test will most likely result in a low rating. Testers who take their time and complete the tasks as requested get good ratings and receive more tests.

Though it may seem like you're completing more tests in a shorter time, you'll actually get fewer tests and make less money overall.

We're Making Screeners Better

"I keep getting tests with the same exact screener questions that I never qualify for. It's frustrating to answer the same screener test over and over again."
We hear that a lot. We've taken the first step towards improving the system and made a change to reduce the amount of the same screeners you see.

You may not see as many tests on your dashboard, but the tests you do see will more likely be tests you qualify for!

Top Tester Tip

Don't take the same test twice.

If you feel like you're looking at a test that you've seen before, don't take it again. The customer won't be able to use your feedback in their study and they might rate you low.

It's best not to accept a test you've already taken. If you're already in the test before you realize you've done it before, you can quit the test.

We're Counting on You

Did you know that tests are posted directly by customers? When you see a test on your dashboard, the customer has written that test with no input from UserTesting.

If you come across a test with links that don't work, or that just plain doesn't make sense, report it. Help us create a great experience for you, your fellow testers, and customers. We're counting on you to report a problem!

Top Tester Tip

So, what if you find that you're not comfortable completing a test? You can always quit the test.

It's better to move on from that test than risk a low rating from a customer for not completing the tasks or not providing meaningful feedback.

November 25th is known as "Black Friday"; American businesses start the shopping season with early openings and deals. In 2015 UserTesting joined REI in closing their doors and spent that time outside with friends and family instead. How will you spend your Friday?

“Last year we started a movement for people to reconnect outdoors over the holidays. We closed on one of the most popular shopping days of the year, paid our 12,000+ employees to spend time outside, and invited America to join us. The response was overwhelmingly positive. More than 1.4 million people and 170 organizations chose to #OptOutside."

We're well into back-to-school, or BTS, shopping season. As one of the most important shopping seasons of the year, customer experience is key. This article features Testers identifying what makes a good experience.

“This new report by user research platform UserTesting identifies which BTS shopping experiences were the best across multiple web devices and physical stores. To compare the BTS shopping experience among five top retailers, UserTesting conducted a study with 270 participants, evaluating the various types of shopping experiences at Target, Wal-Mart, Staples, Office Depot and Amazon.com."

DIFFERENT WAYS TO TEST

Different customers have different needs, some may want to see the test on desktop, and others may want to see it on your phone. Below are just a few examples. To learn more about different testing opportunities on UserTesting check the Tester Support Center.

Be Prepared to take Prototype Tests

"Prototype tests can be a little tricky. The test website or app may not be fully functioning, links may not work, images may be missing, and text might not make sense (like “Lorem Ipsum”). The most important thing to remember is to carefully read and follow the tasks exactly as requested."

IS YOUR MICROPHONE WORKING?

One of the most common reasons you might get a low rating is because the customer can’t hear you. Let’s go over some common audio issues.

To make sure you have good audio, you can test your mic by making a recording on this website: http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/.

TOP TESTER TIP
Just be Yourself!

"It’s important to be truthful when you test. Say what you mean and don’t try to predict what the customer wants to hear. Even if you have the expertise, not every customer wants you to redesign their website or app. Try not to give advice when it’s not requested. The best approach is to adopt the mindset of the Scenario as if you were someone who would really use the website or service."

Thank you for giving us your insights."

June 2016–Contest Winners, 5 Star Feedback, Community News
TESTER NEWSLETTER
June 2016 - Important NewsUserTesting PoliciesContest and Prizes

I CAN'T COMPLETE A TEST, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Some testers have been asking about what to do if you think a test is too long, is asking you too much, or just doesn't work. You can always quit a test or report a problem. You'll never get a low rating and may still get partial payment.

It's best to report a problem or quit immediately so you don't waste your time.
  • Examples of when you should report a problem:
    • Tasks are out of order or don't make sense.
    • The test asks for information you're not comfortable sharing.
    • The test has too many tasks to finish in 15-20 minutes.
  • Examples of when you should quit the test:
    • If you just don't want to finish the test.
    • There's something wrong with your computer or internet.
    • Audio warnings don't go away.
    • You skipped tasks and can no longer complete the test.
Make sure your test is complete before you hit "DONE" and submit your test.

TOP TESTER TIP
Protect Your Personal Information!

"You can accept or decline any test that becomes available to you. Unless otherwise instructed, you should always use fake personal information when completing a test. You can also use a fake mailing address and a free email account (i.e. Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo) just for testing purposes.

If you choose to complete a test that asks for your real information, make sure the instructions say that the information will be blurred."

 1 & 2 STAR POLICIES
Customers rate videos based on how helpful they are. Since we want to provide a quality experience, testers who receive 1 or 2 star ratings won't get many test invites.

Here's how to avoid some the most common ways testers get low ratings:
  1. Try your best to follow task instructions exactlyNot completing tasks as instructed is the #1 reason for poor ratings.
  2. Most tests should take in 15-20 minutes, make sure you complete all of the tasks.
  3. Check your mic. If a customer can't hear you, they might rate you low.
  4. Take your time. If you click ahead or rush you may skip or misread certain tasks.
  5. If you can't start or complete most tasks or just don't feel comfortable, you should quit or report a problem.
We want you to be successful, we review all 1 and 2 star rated tests and will clear any rating that we determine wasn't warranted.

Watch the story about Convoi by Citrix, a scrappy startup within Citrix. From ideation to innovation this tiny team proves that anything is possible when you put your customers first and rely on user feedback to make the right choices for your product—the first time around.

“There’s nothing like putting a test up at 3pm and having video tests start rolling in during the evening. The videos and quotes were immediately actionable."

"Great tester very clear and interesting and overall honest!"

jnikkimd11
“The tester was awesome! I really did not expect this level of thoroughness. It helped us a lot. Thank you.

attosa
"Great review! We got two actionable items from your feedback. Happy you enjoyed the app!
ravenfaust
"Great tester. Followed directions and didn't click around too much. Other users kept sliding around when not being able to find things and this user had restraint and patience to observe."

BlueEyedCurls
“She gave really critical feedback that got us thinking in other ways on how to make our program more trustworthy, and pertinent to parents.

NEW SCREEN RECORDER
New Screen Recorder: Requirements, Tasks, and Minimizing

The UserTesting Screen Recorder just got a complete update. We've listened to lots of feedback and addressed some top concerns in this redesign.

Here’s a few features you might want to look out for:

  • Test requirements will appear on the Screen Recorder before you start recording. This way you can be sure you qualify for a test before taking it.

  • Tasks will first appear in the center of your screen, once you start the task it will minimize into the corner where your Screen Recorder is.

  • We’ve seen some testers struggle with verbal response questions. When completing tasks, first read the task, then click “start” or “next” to begin the task.

If you haven’t already, simply launch the recorder and it will update automatically.

TOP TESTER TIP

Here's a tip we recently shared on the UserTesting Community Facebook

"Great testers get more tests. How can you become a great tester? Try exploring the latest Lesson.ly’s on the Success Center tab on your dashboard. Each lesson has few short quizzes to complete and will give you the foundation to be a successful tester."

 SCREENER AND REQUIREMENT POLICIES

The new Screen Recorder makes it easier for you to see any requirements before you start a test. It has always been important to make sure you qualify for a test.

When you signed up to be a tester, you agreed to our Terms of Use"You will honestly answer screener questions and will not accept tests when you don’t meet the stated requirements."

This is REALLY IMPORTANT. If you complete a test when you don’t meet requirements, it will be a waste of your time as well as the customer’s. And sadly, we will have to remove you from the panel.

Remember, you can always quit a test if you feel unqualified to complete it. You can accept or decline any test that becomes available to you. Testers are never required to anything against their will when testing.

TESTERS MAKING AN IMPACT

Testers make a difference, read this story in the New York Times to find out how. Crowdsourcing is helping businesses and entrepreneurs keep up with rapid paced innovation. Testing takes the guesswork out of demand and can even supply new ideas.

Crowdsourcing to Get Ideas, and Perhaps Save Money

To innovate, business owners are turning to the masses instead of consultants or focus groups.
"Some of the best business ideas are inspired by others, or so the wisdom of the crowd goes. That is leading more entrepreneurs to tap into other people’s brains — rather than just their pocketbooks — to test new products, set pricing and bring ideas to market faster.

'Crowdsourcing has replaced focus groups,' said Chris Hicken, president of UserTesting, a company based in Mountain View, Calif., that specializes in sifting through the ideas of crowds on behalf of online businesses
